Look at the front steps and the walk out to the street. If the surface is gray and grimy, and the roof has gone dull and dark, the house is showing its age. In Boonville, plenty of houses have a lot of age to show.
One in three homes here (33%) was built in 1939 or earlier. That’s the highest share of the six towns we serve, according to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024 five-year estimates. The median home was built in 1965, and only 11% went up in 2000 or later.
Around the courthouse square
Boonville is the Warrick County seat and its largest community, founded in 1818. It’s where a young Abraham Lincoln walked to borrow books and watch John Brackenridge argue cases, which earned the town its nickname, “where Lincoln learned the law.”
The Boonville Public Square Historic District joined the National Register in 1987, roughly bounded by 1st, Sycamore, 4th and Walnut. Its nomination walks through the square’s brick buildings one at a time. At 216 South Third Street, it describes a two-and-a-half story brick building “erected during the summer of 1903,” with Mesker-made iron work (National Park Service nomination). The Old Warrick County Jail is listed too, and the post office holds Ida Abelman’s 1941 mural, “Boonville Beginnings.”
Roof protection for a roof worth keeping
An old house doesn’t always mean an old roof. If your shingles are in good shape, roof protection is a treatment that goes on after cleaning. NexaNano, whose products we apply, says its technology skips the heavy topical membrane and is “designed to integrate with the surface itself while still allowing trapped moisture vapor to escape.” Those are the maker’s words.
After a protection treatment, we check it with a water-beading test. You want to see water bead up and roll off.
First, though, we check your shingle maker’s guidance, and your HOA rules if you have one, before we recommend a treatment. If the answer is no, we won’t put it on.
Concrete cleaning for old walks and steps
Front steps, the walk to the street, the driveway, the patio out back. On an older lot, that concrete has been collecting dirt, mildew and tire marks for a long time. Concrete cleaning takes it back to a clean surface you can actually see.
Cleaning is also step one if you want protection later. NexaNano’s own process for concrete starts by stripping away “dirt, grime, oil stains, mold, and failing coatings” before anything is applied (NexaNano). And here’s a winter habit from the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association: when the weather allows, hose off the salt that cars drag onto driveways and garage slabs.
Boonville storms, on the record
On November 6, 2005, the F3 tornado that crossed the region passed just south of Boonville. On the evening of April 2, 2025, NWS Paducah confirmed an EF-1 with 93 mph winds that began on the northwest side of town, just north of W. North St., where it caused “some slight roof damage.” Another report that night said part of a roof was blown off a house near Millersburg Rd and N Eskew Rd (NWS Paducah via the Storm Prediction Center).
A roof that took a hit needs a roofer, and we’ll say so. If you can’t tell from the ground, our photos will show you.
