No. We never pressure wash a roof. Roofing needs a different approach than concrete, so we use low-pressure cleaning and treatment methods made for roofing materials.
Why pressure is the wrong tool on shingles
Asphalt shingles are covered in small mineral granules. A high-pressure stream can knock them loose and leave the asphalt underneath bare. Aging shingles already shed some granules into the gutters with every hard rain. There’s no reason to speed that up.
That isn’t a guess. InterNACHI says that over time, “the bond between the granules and asphalt deteriorates, and granules will be loosened and carried away by runoff.” Force on an aging shingle only speeds that up. Friction does too, so we skip brushes and brooms as well.
Concrete is a different story. A driveway can take more force. Even NexaNano’s concrete prep calls for “pressure washing or soft-washing equipment.” A roof can’t take that.
What we do instead
We look at the roof first. We only recommend a cleaning when it’s right for that roof. When it is, we use a low-pressure soft wash. The cleaning solution does the work, and the rinse is gentle.
Two things to know:
- A wet roof gets slippery. That’s one more reason to leave the ladder to us. Please don’t climb up there with a garden sprayer.
- Clean doesn’t mean clean for good. Algae can grow back over time. Some owners add a protective treatment afterward to help it stay clean longer.
